The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. He made not a covenant with our fathers, but with us who are here today and live. He spoke to us face to face in the mountain from the midst of the fire. I was the mediator and intermediary between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you his words: for you were afraid of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. And he said I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods in my sight. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor a likeness of any thing that is in the heaven above, or those that are on the earth below, or those that are in the water under the earth. You shall not adore them, nor serve them. For I am the Lord your God: a jealous God, punishing the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation, to those who hate me and showing kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for he shall not go unpunished who takes his name on a vain thing. Keep the Sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Six days you shall work and do all your work. The seventh day is the sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, nor your son, nor your daughter, bondman, nor maidservant, or ox, nor ass, or any other animal, or any stranger who is within your gates; that your servant and your maid may rest, as you also . Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore he commanded you to observe the sabbath day. Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God gives you. Thou shalt not kill do not commit adultery you shall not steal neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife: not his house, nor his field, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his. These words the Lord spoke to all your multitude in the mountain, out of the midst of fire, and cloud, and thick darkness, with a loud voice, adding nothing more: and he wrote them on two tables of stone, which he delivered to me. But after you heard a voice from the midst of darkness and saw the mountain burning, you came to me, all the chief of the tribes and the ancients, and said, Behold, the Lord our God has shewed us his majesty and greatness: we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire, and we have proven to this day that when God speaks with man, man lives. Why then shall we die, and this great fire shall devour us? for if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we shall die. What is it that all flesh should hear the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have heard, and be able to live? Come near and hear all that the Lord our God has said to you, and you will speak to us, and we will listen to it. And when the Lord had heard it, he said to me: I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken to thee: they have spoken all things well. Who would grant them such a mind, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments at all times, that it might be well with them and their children for ever? Go and say to them: Return into your tents. But you stand with me here, and I will speak to you all my commandments, and my statutes, and my judgments, which you shall teach them to do in the land which I will give them for a possession. Therefore, you shall keep and do the things which the Lord your God has commanded you; but you shall walk in the way which the Lord your God has commanded, that you may live, and that it may be well with you, and that the days may be long in the land of your possession.
