These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab: besides the covenant which he made with them in Horeb. And Moses called for all Israel, and said to them: You have seen all that the Lord did before you in the land of Egypt to Pharao, and to all his servants, and to all that land. the great temptations, which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders, and the Lord has not given you an intelligent heart, and eyes to see, and ears that can hear until this day. He brought you forty years through the desert: your clothes were not worn out, nor the shoes of your feet worn out. You did not eat bread, you did not drink wine or strong drink: that you might know that I am the Lord your God. And you came to this place: and Sihon king of Hesebon and Og king of Basan came out against us to fight. We beat them and we took their land and delivered it to Ruben and Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasses. Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and fulfill them: that you may understand all that you do. You all stand today before the Lord your God, your leaders, and your tribes, your elders, and your teachers, all the people of Israel. your children and your wives, and the stranger who stays with you in the camp, besides hewers of wood, and those who bring water. to pass by the covenant of the Lord your God, and by the oath that the Lord your God strikes with you today that he may raise you up to be his people, and that he may be your God, as he promised you, and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Neither do I make this covenant with you only, and confirm these oaths, but to all who are present and absent. For you know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of the nations that passed by You have seen their abominations and their filth, that is, their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which they worshiped. Lest there be among you a man or a woman, family, or tribe, whose heart is turned away today from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations: and among you there may be a root sprouting gall and bitterness. And when he shall hear the words of this oath, he will bless him in his heart, saying: I shall have peace, and I will walk in the stubbornness of my heart: and may the drunkard be thirsty, and the Lord will not forgive him, but then his fury and jealousy will be futile as much as possible against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book may sit on him. and let him consume him in destruction of all the tribes of Israel, according to the curses, which are contained in the book of this law and the covenant. And the next generation shall say, and the children that shall be born hereafter, and the sojourners who shall come from afar, seeing the plagues of that land, and the infirmities with which the Lord afflicted it burning them with sulfur and salt with the heat, so that it is no longer sown, nor should any vegetation grow, as an example of the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Adama and Zeboim, whom the Lord overturned in his wrath and fury. And all the nations shall say, Why has the Lord done so to this land? what is this great wrath of his anger? And they shall answer: Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord, which he made with their fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt and served strange gods, and adored those whom they did not know, and to whom they had not been assigned. therefore the anger of the Lord is kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book: and he cast them out of their land in fury, and in great fury, and cast them into another country, as it is at this day. The secret things, to the Lord our God; the things that are made known to us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
