If you go to war with your enemies, and see cavalry and chariots, and have a greater number than you of the enemy's army, you will not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. And as the battle draws near, the priest shall stand before the battle, and will speak to the people: Hear, O Israel: you today engage in battle against your enemies: let not your heart be afraid, be not afraid, give not up, nor be afraid of them. for the Lord your God is in the midst of you, and will fight for you against your enemies, to deliver you from danger. And the captains shall speak to the officers of each band in the ears of the army: Who is the man that built a new house and did not dedicate it? let him go, and return to his house, lest he should die in battle, and another should hang it. Who is the man who planted a vineyard and made it not yet common, of which it is lawful for all to eat? let him go and return to his house, lest perhaps he should die in war, and another man may perform his duty. Who is the man who espoused a wife and did not take her? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man may take her. Having said this, they will add the rest, and say to the people, "Who is that fearful and fainthearted man?" let him go, and return to his house, lest he make the hearts of his brethren to be affrighted, as he himself was terrified. And when the captains of the army shall hold their peace, and have made an end of the matter, every man shall prepare his troops for battle. If at any time you shall come up to attack a city, you shall first bring peace to it. If they receive it, and open the gates to you, all the people in it will be saved, and will serve you with tribute. But if he will not enter into a league, and begin to wage war against you, you shall besiege it. And when the Lord your God shall deliver it into your hand, you shall smite all that is in it with the edge of the sword, besides women and children, cattle and other animals in the city. You shall divide all the spoil to the army, and you shall eat of the spoils of your enemies, which the Lord your God shall give you. Thus shalt thou do to all the cities which are very far from thee, and there are none of those cities which thou shalt receive for a possession. But of those states which shall be given to you, you will not allow anyone to live at all: but you shall slay with the edge of the sword, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, as the Lord your God has commanded you. lest they should teach you to do all the abominations which they have done to their gods, and sin against the LORD your God. When you besiege a city for a long time, and surround it with fortifications to take it, you shall not cut down the trees which it can eat, nor destroy the country with your axes; for it is wood, and not man; But if any trees are not fruitful, but wild, and suitable for other uses, cut them down, and make engines, till you take the city that fights against you.
