The priests and the Levites, and all who are of the same tribe, shall have no part or inheritance with the rest of Israel, because they shall eat the sacrifices of the Lord, and the offerings thereof: and they shall receive nothing else of the possession of their brethren: for the Lord himself is their inheritance, as he spoke to them. This shall be the judgment of the priests from the people, and from those who offer sacrifices: whether they sacrifice an ox or a sheep, they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the stomach: the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and part of wool from the sheep's shearing. For the Lord your God has chosen him out of all your tribes to stand and minister in the name of the Lord, he and his sons forever. If the Levite should go out of one of your cities out of all Israel where he dwells, and be willing to come, desiring the place which the Lord shall choose, he shall serve in the name of the Lord his God, as all his brothers are Levites, who shall stand before the Lord at that time. He will receive the same portion of food as the others; except that in his city he is due to him by his father's succession. When you go into the land which the Lord your God gives you, take heed that you do not imitate the abominations of those nations. Let no one be found in you who surveys his son or his daughter, leading him through the fire; nor a charmer, nor a consulter of familiar spirits, nor diviners, nor seek truth from the dead. For the Lord abhors all these things, and because of such abominations he will destroy them at your entrance. You will be perfect and unblemished with the Lord your God. These nations, whose land you shall possess, hear soothsayers and diviners; but you have been otherwise instructed by the Lord your God. The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet of your nation and of your brothers like me. that you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb when the assembly was assembled, and you said, "I will no longer hear the voice of the Lord my God, and I will no longer see this great fire, lest I die." And the Lord said to me: They have spoken all things well. I will raise up to them a prophet from among their brothers like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he will speak to them all that I shall command him. But whoever will not hear his words, which he shall speak in my name, I will be the avenger. But the prophet who, being corrupted with arrogance, wishes to speak in my name, which I did not command him to say, or in the name of other gods, shall be put to death. But if you answer in silence, how can I understand the word which the Lord has not spoken? You will have this sign: that that prophet foretold in the name of the Lord, and it did not come to pass: that the Lord did not speak, but the prophet formed it by the swelling of his mind; and therefore you shall not fear him.
